EA, no doubt hypnotized by the low production costs and high profit possibilities of the Wii, has bought Headgate Studios. Headgate, responsible for development on the last six Tiger Woods games on the PC, as well as Madden 07, has been renamed to EA Salt Lake and will focus exclusively on the Wii.
EA’s support for the console comes as no surprise, what with the Wii-exclusive The Sims installment planned for the console. Still, for how much just about everyone in the gaming industry despises EA, this is a good thing. More companies offering exclusives for the console is one of the errors Nintendo’s past console needed to correct and it is looking like that is happening, starting with Ubisoft and EA.

Oh boy — it’s that time of the year again when everyone and their brother gets on the recommended gift bandwagon (tip: ours will, of course, be way better), whether they know what they’re on about or not. This latest list of recommend gifts for Wii owners was shaping up nicely until we got to the number one item. Then it became more of a top ten gifts for the apparently broke and trapped under a rock Nintendo fan. Why? Any list that declares Twilight Princess as the ultimate gift for people who already own the system is immediately suspect — because those of us who love all things Zelda already rushed out and scored a copy. Some even grabbed multiples. Just, y’know, in case. And for the five who didn’t, we’re sorry, and we hope that support group is working out for you. It gets better with time.
It’s not all bad. The SD card that comes in at number three makes a solid gift, and we’re big fans of most of the recommended games. But when it comes to buying gifts for those who already own a Wii, don’t go for the obvious — go for the unusual.
[Thanks, Mike!]

So now we know that Elebits is going to have all sorts of WiiConnect24 features — but what’s it like? How’s it look? We know how these questions burn inside you, because we burn, too. Luckily, we dug up a few screenshots of trades in action. Check after the jump for the electric (and devastatingly cute!) new screens.

With your classic NES and SNES games on the Virtual Console, you (generally) have three options. You can plug in that silly classic controller, and have the Wiimote sit awkwardly on your lap. You can use a Gamecube controller, with its a-bit-too-complex-for-old-school button layout. Or, you can turn your Wiimote on its side for simplistic button configurations. None of these solutions are quite perfect, and fail to evoke that sense on controller nostalgia for which we so long.
Ready for ten tons of cool? Electronic badasses over at RetroZone have made two ever-so-simple adapters that allow you to plug in an NES or SNES controller directly into the Wii’s Gamecube controller ports, for use with VC titles. That’s right. Your original controllers of awesomeness will work as they once did. And only $19.99! What a bargain.

Late last night, shrieks of glee were coming from my living room. “Look!” cried Navi one of my roommates, urging me to the living room. “It’s a system update!” Wonderful possibilities began running through our heads. Could it be an early activation of the news and/or forecast channels? Maybe they were adding new Mii features, or a proper .mp3 playing channel! Alas, such was not the case.
In fact, the update seemed to do very little, with only the cryptic message “Parental Controls updated” left as a clue. Since we (and most readers of this site, most likely) don’t bother with parental controls, does any loving parent out there know what was changed?
Rumors also abound of the update fixing this little problem. HaX0rs?!

The Onion, in full-on satiric overdrive, took some stabs at both the Wii and PS3 in a fairly funny side-by-side comparison. Taking the everyman approach to labelling each system’s strengths and weaknesses in a full-on ‘two systems enter, one system leaves’ battle in the Thunderdome, they gauge such aspects as ’special features’ and ‘the way your peers will view you.’ They’ve got some curse words in there, so we included their observations into the post, past the jump.

In checking in with some of those who waited in line overnight for the Wii, we might have just been shown the world’s biggest fanboy. While it is obvious he has some sort of speech impediment (could be sleep deprivation, but we think it wouldn’t cause someone to talk like that), it hasn’t stopped the internet from making fun of him by putting his face on a T-shirt.

One of our readers, who must be a HUGE Shadowman fan, recently sent an email to Valiant Entertainment, the folks who own the rights to the N64 installment of the game, asking if the game would grace the Virtual Console. Upon sending the email, he received a surprising response:
“Thank you for your interest. Yes, we have been speaking with Nintendo regarding Shadowman for the Virtual Console. Although, they have a ton of games to review and select from, Shadowman is on their radar.”
So they’ve been speaking to Nintendo? Great, we guess, as the more game to grace the Virtual Console the better. We cannot comment on whether we’re excited or not, never having played the game ourselves. How many of you have played the game and would like to see it on the Virtual Console?

Engadget got their hands on a Classic Controller for the Wii and, noticing it has a remarkable resemblance to the SNES controller, they decided to do some side-by-side comparison shots, as well as some of the remote itself next to the Wiimote from all angles, for the vast series of tubes we call the internet. We’ve stolen included their photos into our post, which are embedded past the jump.

While the term Metrio might make you think of a metrosexual Mario, we assure you that is not the case and admit we honestly couldn’t come up with any better name for the above image. Taking the worlds of Metroid and Mario, and mashing them together, we get a very inspired, very cool mixture of Mario and Samus, Metroids and Goombas. Check out a video of the sketch being done, embedded into the post past the jump.
