Bunnies don’t like cosplay (or do they?)

Filed under:

We may not be diehard Xbox fans, but that doesn’t mean we can’t appreciate it when they start dressing up like bunnies. A reader was kind enough to tip us off on this great competition on a German Xbox fansite that ended up with a couple of folks looking like extras from Rayman Raving Rabbids. We can totally get behind anything that produces pictures like these, especially when the Wiimote makes a cameo.

[Thanks, Phillipp!]

Friday video: Behold the future

Filed under:

We can’t decide if we like this future or not, but it’s already here, so we better make up our minds. Behold: legions of videos infesting YouTube, videos of people getting their Wii on. At first it was only a few … and now it’s spreading, like a virus, inundating every aspect of the World Wide Intar Wub! Wii videos are so the new cat pictures. Next week? Wii videos that feature cats. Pictures may be worth a thousand words, but videos get linked everywhere.

And yes, we shamelessly stole the graphic from Warren Ellis.

Japanese hardware sales, 18 Dec - 24 Dec: New Year’s Resolution Edition

Filed under:

Cross 'em.As we here at the Fanboy ready ourselves for the revelry of a new year, we must turn back and view 2006 through shiny, gold-tinted glasses. It’s been a full twelve months of taking names and kicking ass (look forward to a special Review of 2006 series), but we can’t help but think that we could do better.

What’s in store for 2007? The Wii looks to hit it’s stride with games like Sonic and Secret Rings, Super Mario Galaxy, Metroid Prime 3, and dare we even say it, Super Smash Bros: Brawl. As online play is finally implemented, we’re going to bring over Game Night from DS Fanboy, so you can have your chance to beat the crap out of us bloggers. We’ll be starting up a series of Fanboy podcasts quite soon, and we’ll be bringing some new talent into the fold as well.

Let’s not forget, of course, the reason you guys come here in the first place: the weekly Japanese Hardware Sales posts. In case you’ve missed the hilarity (most of the posts came on DS Fanboy exclusively, as Wii numbers were obviously not available for most of the year) there’s a run-down of every edition after the break. We’re curious: which were your favorite? Let us know! We look forward to 2007, readers, and have a wonderful New Year’s!

And holy hell look at those DS Lite numbers.

- DS Lite: 485,584 165,876 (51.88%)
- Wii: 279,277 171,040 (158.02%)
- PSP: 138,588 89,626 (183.05%)
- PS3: 76,882 5,940 (8.37%)
- PS2: 46,209 8,479 (22.47%)
- Xbox 360: 17,213 45 (0.26%)
- Game Boy Micro: 2,394 903 (60.56%)
- GBA SP: 1,858 9 (0.48%)
- Gamecube: 1,250 98 (8.51%)
- DS Phat: 380 222 (140.51%)
- GBA: 57 15 (35.71%)
- Xbox: 11 8 (266.67%)

ARG Edition - A hearty congratulations to Kurifurisan, Mr. Scolex, Oro, and Jennifer for successfully completing last week’s ARG! For the complete solution, check the original post; it’s been updated with all the answers. You guys’ll get your stars soon!

Terminator Edition - The DS Lite has taken over. Only one man, Reggie, can prevent the scourge … but is it too late?

You’ll Just Have To Watch And Find Out Edition - You still have to watch to find out. Still, our finest directorial and editing skills should not be missed.

Choose Your Own Edition Edition - Linearity is so out of style. It’s up to you to track the villain down!

Brainy Edition - We’re not sure if anyone actually took the time to complete our assiduously crafted crossnumber puzzle, but that’s okay. It makes us look smarter than you.

Supply and Demand Edition - Back then, we guessed that the DS Lite would outsell the PS3 by a factor of 6.13 to 1. As of this week, can calculate the totals: 1,769,996 DS Lites to 353,169 PS3s. The official ratio, then, is 5.01. Not bad, if we do say so ourselves.

Stream-of-Consciousness Edition - This post led many to question to use of mind-altering substances in the weekly edition posts. Believe what you will, readers ….

Borat Edition - Sexy time!

Nintendo All Hallow’s Eve Edition - In which Reggie calls George Harrison a bitch. Awesome.

Oscar Acceptance Speech Edition - Who could say no to such a prestigious award? Apparently, not the PSP.

Corner Drug Dealer Edition - The devil’s Fun Dip, if you will.

Dungeons and Dragons Edition - We roll natural 20s. Always.

English Sonnet Edition
- We knew those English classes would come in handy one day. We didn’t know they would be used to glorify sales data from Japan.

Thick Irish Accent Edition - Or should we say Oirish?

Verbose Edition - a mainstay in efficacy, our glib cornucopia of language is inscrutable.

Crazy-Religion Edition
- Look out. Mention religion on a blog, even in jest, and the crazies come out of the woodwork to bite.

First Edition - In truth, our very first edition is unnamed. Still, this trailblazer of a post paved the way for countless laughs to come.

VC Friday: vampires and cities

Filed under:

To those in Europe: don’t forget to check out today’s Virtual Console updates, because there are some sweet games available now.

SimCity (SNES) — 800 points
Super Castlevania IV (SNES) — 800 points
Baseball (NES) - 500 points
Ice Hockey (NES) — 500 points
R-Type (TURBOGRAFX) — 800 points

Super Probotector was scheduled for today, but we’ve heard it was a no-show. Not like you needed it today, not with that lineup! Planning on buying any of these? We definitely recommend Super Castlevania IV.

Nintendo offers prizes, likes Japan more than us

Nintendo of Japan has long supported a “Club Nintendo” program by which ridiculous fanboys (like us) get to register their purchased consoles and software for various rewards. Of course, we have a similar “registering” procedure at MyNintendo.com, but we rarely have anything to show for it … we got a Metroid Prime 2 demo disc, once. Woo-hoo.

It turns out that platinum members (a status obtained by magically accruing four hundred points in a year) of Club Nintendo get to choose between two wonderful prizes: Tingle’s Balloon Fight, for the DS, or a custom battery pack cover with your very own Mii imprinted on the back. Such a difficult decision! Whilst they ponder, perhaps we may spirit away these prizes in the night. Who’s in?

Are we winning the war?

Filed under:

These days, it seems like the answer is a resounding yes, we are winning thus far in the console war. According to the Toronto Star, analysts are certain of it, and we know how reliable those analysts are! It’s still news whenever any retailer gets a shipment, and people are still plotting, shifty-eyed, their shopping strategies. And it’s not just because of a low number of consoles in circulation; we haven’t seen a deluge of fresh PS3s roll off the factory belts, and yet they sometimes languish in stores for a day or two before someone takes them home. To make matters worse, we’ve all heard about the PS3s that get returned because the buyer only wanted to resell it, but couldn’t.

But let’s not count our chickens just yet. We’re still in launch times, and it’s a bit early to be calling the race. But expect to see a lot of articles like the one in the Toronto Star, articles filled with heart-warming Wii stories and sad Sony fans trying to rally their cause. It’s okay to feel a momentary glimmer of pride — that’s our baby, out there in the trenches! — but let’s see how things shape up over the next six months.

12 player multiplayer in WarioWare: Smooth Moves

Filed under:

Siliconera has uploaded a video explaining how twelve person multiplayer is going to work. First, everyone makes an angel, then the game randomly chooses an angel and makes them play a minigame. In full-on elimination style, the last angel standing comes out the victor. We’ve embedded Siliconera’s video into the post, past the jump.

Poll results: how do you get your Wii on?

Filed under:

Well, it seems most of you are a fan of the stand and deliver approach to gaming on your Wii, shunning those who are both without Wii and sit whilst playing as if they were second class citizens. How dare you?! You should be ashamed of yourself!

All joking aside, it turns out quite a bit of you play differently depending on the game. Perhaps our poll should’ve reflected that, but even with the change we’re pretty sure the results would’ve come out near the same.

Previous Nintendo Wii Fanboy polls:

WRUP: waiting is the hardest part edition

For the next two weeks or so, we’re all probably sitting around and waiting for the release of WarioWare Smooth Moves. Well, we are, but you might not be. So, in the meantime, what will you be playing this weekend to take your mind off of the wait? Or, are you to be out on the town, tearing it up in the usual ‘I’m 21 or over and am therefore going to overdo it this weekend’ fashion, celebrating the new year?

For us, we don’t plan on doing much gaming since we have to find ourselves a new employee to join us in the Wii Fanboy dungeon and enjoy the daily tire iron beatings the Joystiq staff subjects us to. Oh, how we love the feeling of cold steel hitting us over and over again …

Past posts: What were you playing?

Tomorrow morning - Wiis on Amazon

You neeeeed one.
Just a heads up for you folks still, quite sadly, Wii-less. No one should have to endure this painful, horrendous holiday break without a Wii, and with any luck, Amazon’s got you covered.

Should you read this article in time, Amazon will once again take orders for the Wii between 7 AM and 11 AM PST (10 AM to 2 PM EST) on December 29th. Once again, supplies are limited, so it’s best to jump on the offer as soon as humanly possible. Good luck, brave troopers!

(Note: Offer does not include free disembodied hand.)
