Spawned as the gamer’s answer to the price of the PS3, or out of spite and anger toward Sony fanboys (depending on who you ask), the Wii60 “movement” isn’t something we’ve much discussed around here, though sometimes it’s a good excuse to talk about the mountain of awesome that is Reggie Fils-Aime. Regardless of how you feel about the neologism created to define those who own both a 360 and a Wii in favor of a PS3, we are curious about how many of our readers are living the definition. What’s hooked into your television, and why have you chosen the consoles that you own? Let us know in the comments.
[Thanks to Christopher for supplying his Wii60 image!]

A reader dropped us a note about the money he’d thus far poured into the Wii, and at first our jaws dropped at the amount … and then we started adding up our own costs, and boy weren’t we red-faced. Let’s look at some of the basic items:
Console: $250
Wii Remote: $40 (each)
Nunchuk: $20 (each)
Games: $50 (each)
Classic controller: $20 (each)
Component cables: $30
So let’s assume that we’re Little Lisha Fangirl, and we head out to get hooked up with the Wii goodness. We buy a console, one extra controller and nunchuk, a couple of classic controllers, and two games, as well as component cables. With tax, we’re probably looking at a little over $500. Not too bad; after all, you’re not buying extra shinyz for a PS3 or 360 plus the console for that … you’re probably not even getting a PS3 by itself for that. But then you start laying in a few extras. Third and fourth controller, say. A couple of those nifty controller gloves so you don’t have to play guess-which-remote-is-player-one. And you have to have some Wii points, so you break out the credit card and load up. You pick up an SD card. And suddenly your reasonable console, when you add in a couple more games, is slouching toward a cool grand.
Ouch. We’re even the inexpensive guys. How do you feel about the costs of gaming these days? It seems there are more games around than we could possibly buy and play and grok in fullness, but we do what we can. Still, do you ever feel overwhelmed by the hidden costs of gaming? That’s today’s question.
[Thanks, RD!]

Get ready to welcome our new WiiBot overlords, because robot plus sword always calculates out as world domination. Also, this latest creative use of the Wiimote kinda makes all the other hacks look a little, well, lame.
“Check this out! I can play World of Warcraft with my Wiimote!”
“Oh yeah? Well, I can cut you with my Wiimote-controlled machine of death.”
WiiBot is just a pocket full of win, and it comes complete with hilarious video footage. We’re truly living in a golden age.

If we could distill all of Nintendo fandom in a short video, it would probably look sort of like this. Well, if we’d had a few beers, but hey, it’s Friday and that’s okay. But all discussion of our plans for the evening aside, this week’s featured video is a music video that spent this week in the spotlight at YouTube, so there’s a chance you’ve already seen it. It’s worth another watch, for the humor if nothing else, but there’s probably something in there that rings true in all of us ….

Only two titles on the Virtual Console this week in Europe, but it doesn’t matter, because one of them is Mario Kart 64. So we’ll just see you guys on Monday then, right? We recommend two applications of pain cream per day if you want to play at maximum capacity — it keeps those fingers from cramping up.
- Mario Kart 64 (N64) — 1000 Wii points
- Soldier Blade (Turbografx) — 600 Wii points

Hudson Entertainment’s Director of Marketing made some interesting comments recently regarding the possibility of a new channel going live on the Wii. John Lee, during an interview with Game Informer, replied to a question about original downloadable content on Wii from Hudson with “in the future, you should rephrase that question to: Are there any plans to launch original content on some downloadable service on the Wii, and you might get a different answer.”
In response to the rumor created by Lee’s statement, CVG asked Nintendo to comment on the situation. Nintendo said “We cannot confirm at this time in what format the new content will be delivered, but in the future there will be original games available for download through the Wii Shop.” So, we might or might not see an original games channel per se, but we will see original content in some shape or form. Rock!

If you’ve booted up the Wii today, you might have noticed an update that unlocks the News Channel arrived a little early. Earlier we reported that this was to occur on Saturday, January 27th (tomorrow), so news of an early release should place a feather in the cap of those waiting on it to become available. News available comes via The Associated Press, covering the categories of National News, International News, Sports, Arts/Entertainment, Business, Science/Health and Technology.

One of our favorite activities every weekend is to get the group together and play Wii Sports: Bowling. We tried to play Elebits, but the fact that the first player controls the camera is just too cheap. So, we get some beers and bowl for a couple of hours. It’s pretty much the single greatest thing this blogger looks forward to every week. This got us to thinking about scores. See, our high score is 217 and we were wondering what your high score in bowling was. Perhaps you bowled a perfect game?
Aside from that, what will you be playing this weekend?

Once upon a time, the Wii was known as the Revolution, and it was good. Then Nintendo announced that the console’s real name would be Wii, and the backlash rocked the media and gaming community.
Also, there were a lot of anatomical jokes.
But here we are, not quite a year later, basking in the success of the new system … when we can stop playing it, that is. We’ve had a little time to get used to the new name, but we have to ask — how is it? Do you like “Wii” now? Does it suit the system? Or has the Wii succeeded thus far in spite of the name?
We also recommend going back and looking at the comments on that old post, as they’re certain to make interesting reading alongside what is said here today.
