Another real life fan video, only funny this time

Filed under:

>>>>

Although the real life Smash Brothers video had its moments, it didn’t impress us too much. Mega64’s enactment of Super Mario Bros. 3’s kuribo shoe, however, tickled us in the right places. The kuribo shoe was probably one of the most exciting parts of the game (which says a lot, since the whole thing was awesome). In real life though, it just looks exhausting. And hilarious. Or maybe we’re just fickle like that.

Canstructed Mario feeds the hungry

Filed under:

We have to say, a Mario made out of cans is pretty awesome. What’s even better, though, is that this sculpture was made for a charity competition known as Canstruction. This unique charity donates the canned goods used in structures like this to local food banks.

Canstruction presented the canned Mario last year, but since the holidays are coming up we thought we’d try to get you all into the giving spirit. We love video games, but donating stuff is rad, too. [/Public Service Announcement]

Check out more pictures of the canned Mario after the break.

The VC Advantage: Spooky Halloween edition

Filed under:

The internet has made it easy to find cheats for games, but we miss the tips pages from game magazines, when the discovery of a new code could inspire you to go back to an old game. These codes aren’t exactly new, but oldness is the essence of the Virtual Console! We’re bringing back the classic codes every week on The VC Advantage.

Today is the perfect day to look at some of the spookier games on the Virtual Console, and then help you face your fears and take them on. It would certainly have been a good day to talk about Ghosts ‘n Goblins games, as well, but … we already did that. Uh, as part of our Halloween special, here’s a link to that old VC Advantage! It’s … uh, back from the dead!

Luckily, awkward backlinks aren’t the only thing we can present for our Halloween edition of The VC Advantage. There are still some gruesome games we have yet to cover!

And that means that it’s now totally scary time! Turn out all the lights and stuff! We’re making weird “oooooo” spooky noises, but you can’t hear it, because we’ll have written this hours ago by the time you’re reading it, and also we’re not in the same room as you!

Splatterhouse (TG16)
Hard mode: What’s scarier than a game in which the main character dies, over and over and over again, forced to relive the same horrific period of a few seconds before he’s ripped apart yet again by disgusting, nightmarish monsters? Probably a lot of stuff. Dentistry comes to mind. Loneliness. But what’s scarier in the context of video game alterations caused by input of preprogrammed button sequences? Probably still some stuff. To access hard mode, hold Select at the title screen until the word HARD appears.

Castlevania (NES)
Hard mode: Yes, it’s another hard mode, but this one seems pretty notable. We had no idea that Castlevania even had one of these, and we doubt anyone else ever would have were it not for cheat devices and ROM hacking– because you access Castlevania’s hard mode by completing the game, and that is impossible. Of all the games to put a hard mode in. Also we heard that if you finish the hard mode, Koji Igarashi will ride a Medusa head to your house and give you a million dollars. And nobody will ever know if that’s true.

Kid Chameleon
(GEN)

Level skip: Kid Chameleon isn’t really that scary, but it is about dressing up in costumes. And that is the true meaning of Halloween (also, candy, which is delicious, when eaten.) To skip straight to the last boss, find some blogs above the flag in the Blue Lake Woods level and jump to the last one. Then press down, right, jump, and special.

Dude, where’s my Portal?

Filed under:

We don’t know where this rumor came from, but there have been whisperings of a version of Valve’s cake-pushing (it’s a lie, we hear), environmental puzzlefest involving some kind of weird gun making its way onto the Wii. In true baby-punching* fashion, Valve has shot down rumors of the title’s release on the Wii, as rep Doug Lombardi stated that it’s “an extremely interesting idea, but there’s nothing in product.”

Of course, as with most of these gaming rumors, it just won’t be taken out back and shot like a certain yellow dog. Doug added “not yet, anyway,” at the end of his quote there, leaving us all wondering if this could happen. And, if it did, wouldn’t it be the perfect Wii Ware download?

*Nobody at Valve punched a baby, to our knowledge. What they do on their own time, is their business.

It’s Halloween! Look at some pumpkins!

Filed under:

Having a wife that indulges you in your obsession with gaming is nice, but one that participates in said obsession is even better. Hence, we have these two lovely pumpkins, carved by reader Colleen and her husband (unless his name is Colleen, which we’ve never heard before), they’re some of the most awesome pumpkins our little eyes have ever seen.

If you have a Nintendo-related pumpkin of your own, be sure to link it in the comments below. And, if you didn’t know, Joystiq is running a contest right now looking for these kind of creations.

Gift services go live worldwide for holidays

Sure, maybe a lot of you don’t find the idea itself terribly exciting, but we are definitely pleased to hear that the Wii Shop Channel’s new gift feature will be live worldwide in time for the holidays. Now you’ll be able to gift friends with awesome old games without having to track them down in physical form — and without unloading a lot of cash, either. That’s a win all around.

It might also be worth noting that Gamefront’s headline on the announcement had the “Wii Gift Channel” in English, and since “das Gift” means “poison” in German, Google’s autotranslator informed us that the Wii Poison Channel would be a go in December. We’re not quite as excited about that one, frankly.

The good stuff in Medal of Honor: Heroes 2

>

Sure, the Wii is slowly, but surely, building a library of online-compatible titles that are worth playing, but only one looks like it’s going to be a title with the kind of replay value we’re looking for. That game is Medal of Honor: Heroes 2 (otherwise known as Matt C’s game of the millenium). Well, while we aren’t ready and willing to hand over our first born for the game, we will say it is looking good so far.

What say you?

A suitable substitute for a dolphin-shaped Zapper

Filed under:

We have lamented the lack of a hilarious themed Zapper to enhance our enjoyment of the ridiculous bonus mode in Ghost Squad, but now it seems that our troubles have come to an end thanks to Pega, whose silly gun shells we’ve enjoyed in the past. They’re still playing easily, and playing happily!

Sure, the gun actually represents a shark shape, but it’s close enough to a Wii-white version of the Ghost Squad dolphin squirt gun for our purposes. Isn’t it amazing that Pega and other third-rate peripheral companies have graduated to outlandish gun shell designs while Nintendo has yet to release their own Zapper worldwide?

Oneechanbara R: a revolution?

GAME Watch is referring to D3 Publisher’s Oneechanbara R as Oneechanbara Revolution now, solving the mystery of what the R means. We sort of assumed that it was “Remake,” ourselves. Does this mean that the new Oneechanbara game takes significant steps forward toward becoming more than a ridiculous novelty game?

Probably not. The title is probably just a reference to the Wii, once called the Revolution itself. Oh, well. Let’s not let the supposed terribleness of the games bring us down. Today is the best day of the year for browsing a bunch of screenshots of bloody zombies, and GAME Watch has obliged with a large collection of new screens.

Their post also reveals that the game contains not just the cowboy-hat-and-bikini-clad Aya, but also Saki, the other playable character from the first Oneechanbara game, just in case you’d like to choose which underdressed girl with whom to slash monsters.
